Does Shopify Store Product Dimensions?

Does Shopify store product dimensions? Shopify stores variant weight natively. It does not give every product first-class length, width, and height fields for packing. Merchants who cartonize store L/W/H in metafields, in a packing app, or they type them at pack time. Confusing weight with dimensions is why mixed Shopify orders ship in the wrong box.
What Shopify stores out of the box
On a variant you get weight and a weight unit. That number is useful for shipping rates and for carton max-weight checks. It says nothing about whether a 200 g bottle fits beside a 200 g mailer insert.
Under Settings → Shipping, you can define shipping packages (box names and outer sizes) for the label workflow. Those are carton templates, not SKU dimensions.
Where length, width, and height actually live
Most catalogs put L/W/H in product or variant metafields—custom keys such as length, width, height, or an app namespace. Units are inconsistent (cm, mm, in) unless you discipline them. Some ERP/PIM syncs dump a single “dimensions” string that packing software has to parse.
WiCartonize can map those metafields into a packing catalog (length, width, height) and keep Shopify as the source of truth for the rest of the product. Missing measurements stay visible instead of silently packing with zeros.
Why this gap breaks packing
Carriers bill outer carton DIM weight. Packing needs inner fit. If Shopify only has grams, the packer guesses a mailer. Guessing is how you buy void fill by the pallet.
Cartonization requires all four: length, width, height, weight. Public APIs should speak those names—not x/y/z. Read what cartonization is.
How to fix dimensions on a live Shopify catalog
A practical cleanup sequence:
- Pick one unit system for packing (cm or in) and convert on import.
- Create or map metafields for length, width, and height at variant level when sizes differ.
- Measure the top SKUs that drive 80% of orders; do not wait for a perfect catalog.
- Reject pack runs when a line is missing any axis or weight.
- Keep shipping-package sizes in the box library, separate from SKU size.
Shopify Admin vs packing software
Admin is the order system of record. Packing software is the geometry system of record. Sync variants in, complete measurements, generate a plan, fulfill by package. Do not try to turn metafields into a 3D engine.
Setup: WiCartonize for Shopify.
Can I add length, width, and height in Shopify without an app?
Yes, as metafields. Shopify will not use them to choose a carton unless packing software reads them.
Are shipping packages the same as product dimensions?
No. Packages describe cartons you stock. Product dimensions describe SKUs that go inside.
Does Shopify Shipping need dimensions?
Rate shopping may use package size at label time. It still does not 3D-pack mixed line items into the right carton.
What if only some SKUs have metafields?
Pack with stored IDs where measurements exist and inline dimensions where they do not. Never invent size from weight.
